Our Story
Humble beginnings.
In 1979, four experienced musicians, Millicent Daugherty, Dr. Wayne Smith, Evelyn Allen and William Steward., joined together to form a performing arts educational institute. Contributing $500 each, they launched in Evelyn’s dining room. Their vision was to provide access to music theory and training programs to help students thrive. Millicent carried the vision forward and the program grew. In 1985, the Music/Arts Institute (MAI) purchased an unused elementary school from the Independence School District and the dream took flight.
As MAI grew, educational programs expanded, with training on brass, woodwinds, percussion, harp, piano and percussion. Ensembles were added, including the Young MAIsterSingers choir, which provided additional opportunities to learn and perform across the Kansas City Metro.
Inspiring excellence.
Over our 35 year history, MAI has helped hundreds of young artists aspire to excellence in the performing arts. Our students are recognized for their accomplishments at music contests and regularly earn state honors. Alumni are regularly recruited by prestigious university schools of music and perform in opera companies, orchestras and bands across the United States and Europe. Our team regularly collaborates with arts organizations, colleges, school districts and performing groups to expand opportunities for our students.
MAI guides performers toward careers in music performance and education, and strives to develop the next generation of patrons of the arts. While we stress excellence and career opportunities, we also recognize that many students may not pursue a career in music. For them, we nurture a love of the arts and the values of respect and commitment that last a lifetime.
Providing access for all.
Music/Arts Institute is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to helping all young artists access the training and opportunities they need to advance their passion. We serve students in Independence, Raytown, Blue Springs, and across the Kansas City metropolitan area!
To help students participate in private lessons or ensemble programs, MAI has a scholarship program to help offset costs. Scholarships are granted based on the needs of each individual student or family. We are also committed to diversity and inclusion in all of our programs, recognizing the unique gifts of all students who join our musical family.
Growing into the future.
As MAI looks to the future, we’re focused on growing opportunities to help young artists thrive. From expanding with new offerings in dance and continuing to build our music programs, to recruiting talented faculty and team members to deliver a great experience for all.
We do this with a recognition of the value of pursuing the performing arts, including self-discipling, inquisitiveness, a desire to improve and tools for critical thinking. All valuable skills to help young people grow and find success in whatever life has in store.
