Daugherty Community School of the Arts headquartered in Independence, Missouri, is a professional children's choir of students ranging from 8 to 14 years of age.The group has been featured at the inaugural weekend open house for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, with the Kansas City Symphony for Carmen, Tosca, Britten’s War Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings and The Kansas City Symphony's The Magic of Christmas. Music/Arts also prepared the child soloists for the commissioned work Summer Sun/Winter Moon by Robert Kapilow and The Lord of the Rings.
Members of the choir come from several greater Kansas City cities: Archie, Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit, Oak Grove, Liberty, Kansas City, Greenwood, Sugar Creek and Independence. Continuing enrollment allows children to audition at various times throughout the year.
The Global Rhythm Project is a high-energy group of drumming enthusiasts dedicated to exploring the vast world of ethnic percussion traditions.
GRP began in 2002 as a supplement to the percussion program at Music/Arts Institute. As a natural extension of instructor Jon Donald's studies in graduate school with several outstanding ethnic drummers, the ensemble came into being as a means of further developing MAI percussion students to be truly "complete musicians."
Because we use no printed music, GRP members develop excellent listening skills and the ability to hear a rhythm and repeat it. Students learn to understand the underlying structure of each rhythm and the process of layering simple parts together to create complex patterns. Through this, they hone the skills needed to dissect, interpret and internalize very complicated rhythms!
Thanks to a generous initial donation from MAI founder Millicent A. Daugherty, Jon was able to augment his already sizable collection of instruments, and the rest is history—GRP has been a vibrant, energetic addition to the Music/Arts' ensemble lineup for more than a decade!
